The USA was the first country to map their news deserts. The report was made by the Knight Chair in Journalism and Digital Media Economic in 2018, where the following data stands out:

  • 3114 counties - 220 don’t have local newspapers
  • 1540 counties with only one newspaper, usually a weekly
  • 1800 newspapers were closed between 2004-2018, including 60 daily and 1700 weekly
  • Most American news deserts are in the middle of the country, far from the coasts.
