Brazil was the second country to map their news desert. The research was made by Atlas da Notícia and the current data is from 2022.

  • 5570 cities 
  • 3280 cities didn't have local newspapers in 2019. In 2022 there are 2968 cities without local publications, meaning that in four years the desert news has decreased 9.5%
  • The desert news reaches 29,3 million of people, 13,8% of Brazilian population
  • The Northeast Region is the most affected by news desert. This is the poorest region in Brazil.

However, the latest report pointed 642 news journalist outlets in the country. The most new projects are digital natives: 449
