On April 1, 2022, the Portuguese weekly newspaper i launched an edition made “almost without human intervention”, according to the newspaper’s own management. The word “almost” was used to emphasize that, although the news and reports were written by ChatGPT, the titles and images were produced by the newsroom's journalists. Regardless of this particularity, the newspaper claims to be the first in the world made with ChatGPT, which is why this study is justified. The interest is redoubled because there was no review of the texts produced, which constitutes a case of excellence for studying algorithmic work. This work analyzes the autonomous production of the algorithm developed by openAI to find out whether algorithms have the potential to replace journalists in newsrooms. It is concluded that, despite some advantages for journalism, bots still do not produce content with the rigor and quality that journalistic activity requires, and therefore cannot function autonomously.
