Abstract

Accurate and publicly accessible information is fundamental to accountable democratic governance. The value of accurate information has been made particularly salient by the deleterious effects of the recent rise of online dis and misinformation and the decline of trust in journalism. While the essential role of information for democracy may sound like common sense, academic researchers have recently applied rigorous methodological tools to confirm the role of journalism in promoting government accountability and civic engagement as well as fighting corruption. Naturally, this helps protect and promote human rights and sustainable development goals.
